A Brief History 桜島活動状況

With each eruption, Sakurajima continues to change in appearance.
Mt. Sakurajima is very grand and beautiful, but has, throughout time, taken the lives of the people of Sakurajima and destroyed the beautiful surrounding nature. The people continue to suffer from damages of past eruptions and fear for coming ones.

　日々その表情を変え続けている桜島。
　美しく雄大な桜島が時に、人の命や美しい自然をも奪い去ってしまうことがある。ここ桜島に住む人々は昔から爆発による被害に悩まされ続けてきた。

　Past Eruptions and Damages Reported　桜島被害状況　

January 12,1946 １９１４年（大正３年）１月１２日	Simultaneous eruption from two cones, streams of lava, ash filled the air. 山腹２カ所噴火、溶岩流噴火、降灰　　被害は５８人死亡　重軽傷者１１２人 Damage : 58 dead, 112 injured, 2148 houses burnt down, 12 completely destroyed houses. 焼失戸数　２１４８戸　住家全壊　１２戸　有村・瀬戸・脇・横山・小池・赤水の部落埋没
March 9,1946 １９４６年（昭和２１年）３月９日	Big eruption, streams of lava, ash filled the air. 大噴火・降灰・溶石流噴火・爆発・降灰ひどし Damage : Arimura area buried, harvest completely destroyed. 有村埋没農作物全滅
October 13, 1955 １９５５年（昭和３０年）１０月１３日	Eruption, smoke, ash, falling rocks. 噴火・噴煙・降灰・落石 Damage : 1 dead, 9 injured 被害は死者１人傷者９人
July 21,1984 １９８４年（昭和５９年）７月２１日	Eruption at 3:00 p.m. A big rock - 5meters across, 15meters in circumference - was blown towards the town by the force of the eruption. 午後３時爆発　直径５ｍ、周り１５ｍの大石落下 A Fire broke out in Arimura 有村民家火災発生
November 28, 1986 １９８６年（昭和６１年）１１月２８日	Falling rock hit a hotel in Furusato. It made a hole 3 meters deep. ふるさとのホテルに噴石が落下し、直径３ｍの穴があいた。

Apart from these big eruptions, Mt.Sakurajima erupts from ten to a hundred times every year. Although severe damages have not been reported in the past 10 years, a big eruption may take place again soon.　

　大正３年からの被害を簡単にあげてみたが、これだけではなく桜島は毎年数十回から数百回の爆発をしている。ここ１０年は大きな被害は報告されていないが、またいつ大爆発が起こらないとも限らない。

Beautiful and grand ..... but fearful at the same time....

美しく雄大でそして時には恐ろしく・・・・・・。

We wonder what it will look like tomorrow ....?

明日は、私たちにどのような表情を見せてくれるのだろうか・・・・・・？
