The Shinto Shrine Gate, which used to stand
3meters high was buried by a big eruption
on January 12th, 1914.
大正3年1月12日桜島大噴火で高さ3mの鳥居埋没

Mt.Sakurajima has had many eruptions. The last notorious eruption occured on January 12th 1914. Lava-flow damaged the areas of Hakamagoshi and Kurokami where about 700 houses were completely buried. The 3 meter high shrine gate of what was "Hragosha Shrine" shows the extent of the damages- only the top 1 meter of the gate can now be seen. Sakurajima, previously an island, became connected with the Osumi peninsula by the lava-flow from this eruption.
桜島は、今まで何度も爆発をしています。最近の爆発で有名なのは、なんといっても、あの大正3年1月12日の桜島大噴火です。溶岩が流出したのは袴腰と黒神方面でした。黒神の方では約700戸が火山灰に埋もれたり、溶岩が桜島と隣の大隅半島を陸続きにさせるなど大惨事でした。なかでも有名なのが高さ3mの原五社神社が上の方(笠木)だけを残して埋没しました。
